Northfleet North

Welcome to the Northfleet North 'Our Bigger Story' website. This is part of the multi media evaluation of 15 Big Local areas in England. The website is an opportunity to follow what is changing in Northfleet North as a result of Big Local over a ten year period.

The aim of the website is to share the learning from everything that is happening in Northfleet North with other Big Local areas and highlight what works in communities with a wider audience of practitioners and policy makers.

    Here at Northfleet Big Local we are pleased to be able to provide our friends at Hive Hope and Make Lunch families, a limited number of "Let's Create" packs. One for 4 - 12 year olds and another for 13 - 18 years. The packs have been funded by Kent County Council,, Arts Council England and National Opera House Bridge. Supported by GBC and whole host of wonderful organisations and artists.

    At long last the tiles designed and made by local residents for the Sturge Fountain wall project were put in place. Huge thanks to everyone involved they look fantastic. We hope to start the next batch in the autumn so if you have an idea for a design do let us know.

    In June 2019 Our Bigger Story hosted a 2 day event for all the case study areas. During this time, each of the OBS areas mapped their journey. Here are a few photos.

    We held 2 sessions for residents and volunteers to come along and clean up our streets. Bacon rolls and Easter eggs were waiting as a thank you. We had 27 volunteers in total and collected 33 bags of rubbish and a shopping trolley!

    We had local historian Christoph Bull come to our weekly community cafe to give a talk about the history of the area. The talk was certainly very interesting and well received by all, including those who remembered some of the history first hand.

    We held a mini pop up market in Northfleet North. The suitcase conga brought residents together by selling unloved items at a bargain price. We had suitcases full of bargains snaking around The Hill, whilst listening to Cuban and Bhangra music!

    Gravesham arts is an organisation who deal with artistic and creative events in Gravesham. Based at The St Andrews Arts Centre. Northfleet Big Local were lucky enough to be invited to hold 6 stalls at a fantastic event in Gravesend this summer.

    We have been holding a monthly community market in Northfleet North, each month the number of stalls and customers is growing. It has been a scheme that is growing in popularity and has a really lovely traditional feel about it.

    Here are pictures from The North Northfleet monthly community barbeque which brings together the residents from within our Big Local area. Residents can come and meet each other and enjoy some tasty food in the surroundings of The Secret Garden.

    This was North Nortfleet'ssecond Big Local Christmas market. We had live music from the Big Local music club, a hog roast and a variety of stalls. It turned out to be a fantastic event with over 400 residents coming out to enjoy the festivities!

    Our scheme delivers a variety of sports in the Northfleet Big Local area. We reward those involved with a trip to The Olympic Park!

    This is North Northfleet's annual summer celebration. It is a big community event which we use to showcase all of the different activities that The Big Local is involved in and where we celebrate all of the good work that our volunteers do.

    This new playpark was opened by the community for the community. Local company Lafarge leased the land, which has now been taken on by CVS. Big Local funded the project and the playpark will be maintained by the Seven Avenues Residents Association.

    An ongoing local project with Northfleet school for girls. Each year they design and make tiles which display the rich heritage within Northfleet. They are positioned at The Hive, in a location where many people can walk past and admire them.

    This area started off as an over grown piece of land until it was transformed by No Walls Gardens and St Botolphs Church into a community space. It now hosts a monthly barbeque and craft sessions as well as growing its own fruit and vegetables.
